Every year I buy Mitolo GAM — it is one of my favorite Australian wines. Every cellar should have wines from Mitolo. Mitolo wines are the result of a brilliant partnership between Frank Mitolo and Ben Glaetzer. You can learn more about Mitolo’s wines at http://www.mitolowines.com.au/.
I have bought the last 5 vintages and each has been consistently excellent. I would list this as one of my top 25 as well as top 25 for the money. Price on this wine ranges from $36 to $50 dollars a bottle.
Lush and velvet mouth feel. Blackberry, chocolate, licorice with good acidity and very pure. Very drinkable. Memorable.
G.A.M. represents the first initial of each of the Mitolo children’s first names – Gemma, Alex and Marco.
‘Honor nostrorum liverorum pulchrorum’
‘In honour of our lineage’
The G.A.M. Shiraz comes from the Chinese Block vineyard which is located in the Willunga district at the southern end of McLaren Vale. The soils, which are heavy grey loam soils over sandstone, intermixed with black Biscay clay, combined with a maritime climate, contribute to an even ripening period and the development of rich fruit flavours and ripe tannins. Yield was around 2.3 tonnes an acre (40 hl/ha) from vines with an average age of 20 year old. Harvest commenced on 18th March 2005.
A dense ruby/purple colour. It possesses layers of dried spice, coffee, blackcurrant and the wine displays fullness, freshness and seamless oak integration.
95 points Robert Parker: “Fashioned from a McLaren Vale vineyard, the 2005 Shiraz G.A.M. (named after the Mitolo children – Gemma, Alexander, and Marco) is a deep ruby/purple-hued effort displaying beautiful blackberry, white pepper, licorice, and toasty oak notes. Rich, full-bodied, and intense, with blueberry and blackberry flavors, sweet tannin, and excellent purity, it is a tour de force in winemaking. Enjoy it over the next decade.” (10/06)
